Libby: Get ebooks from your local public library (even in Germany) ↗

All over the world, local libraries offer millions of ebooks and audiobooks. You can borrow them — for free, instantly — with a library card and Libby: the award-winning, much-loved app for libraries.

As part of my move away from the Kindle ecosystem I chose a Kobo reader in part to start reading books through my local library and it’s been great. Even in Germany, many public libraries now let you sign-up online and borrow ebooks for a moderate yearly fee.

Munich’s library is available to those of us in the surrounding suburbs as well and has a decent selection of English titles through Libby. Borrowing titles on the Kobo works relatively well (occasionally you’ll need to re-authenticate your library card) and has helped me expand the types of books I’m reading as well.

The app is quite nicely done and more convenient than borrowing directly on the Kobo (though that does also work in a pinch for those nights you unexpectedly finish a book and still can’t sleep…).

Support your libraries, read more and give your brain some respite from doomscrolling with free library ebooks.
